December 6, 2023 - Gering High School has been selected as a state finalist in the 14th Annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. This is the seventh time Gering High School has been selected as a state finalist, winning the national prize in 2017.

For this year's project, students are focusing on the use of drone technology to efficiently spread salt on ice. Students are using 3D modeling software to design and create a hopper and spreader that will efficiently distribute the salt, the classroom 3D printers will produce the necessary parts after student design.

"We're excited to learn we've been selected as a state finalist again this year," shares GHS STEM teacher and Project Advisor, Aaron Pierce. "'Students are eager to get to work on next steps. This project-based learning helps them become better collaborators and critical thinkers," he continued.

Solve for Tomorrow is a national competition that challenges U.S. public school students in grades 6-12 to explore the role science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) can play in solving some of the biggest issues in their local communities.

As a part of the next phase, students and sponsors at each of the state finalist schools will be asked to submit lesson plans detailing how their proposed STEM project will address the identified community issue.

"STEM excellence is a rich part of our strong academic history at Gering Public Schools," shares Gering Superintendent, Dr. Nicole Regan. "We're thrilled to celebrate the continued success of our students working through Samsung Solve for Tomorrow to solve real-world challenges," she continued.
