GPS Operational Zones

Gering Public Schools has worked hard to create plans with our core beliefs in mind. We will likely begin operating in the yellow (moderate risk) operational zone on August 14th. GPS leaders will work in collaboration with local public health officials, Nebraska Department of Education, ESU #13, and others to make decisions as to operational models, based on the community risk dial, which is available to the public on the PPHD website

GPS Yellow (moderate risk) Zone

Majority of students are served in the traditional school setting, with the option of Extended Campus Learning as determined by the district.

This zone assumes that it is safe to open with enhanced cleaning protocols, social distancing, mask use (although an opt out form is available for families to turn into building administrators), screening protocols, and some slight capacity reductions. The majority of students will be served traditionally in-person, while others, who have selected the Extended Campus Learning option, will attend virtually. Student placements are to be approved by building principals on an individual basis.

GPS Orange (high risk) Zone

Selected grade levels and programs will be held in-person, others will move to Extended Campus Learning

This zone assumes that capacity will be heavily restricted due to Directed Health Measures and social distancing expectations. GPS will determine specific grade levels and programs to be offered in-person. At this time, we have prioritized elementary grade levels and CTE courses most in need of being delivered with in-person, hands-on instruction and support.

GPS Red (severe risk) Zone

Due to DHM and restrictions, all students are taught using Extended Campus Learning

This zone assumes that based on Directed Health Measures and recommendations, it would be in the best interest of students, staff and the community to move students to Extended Campus Learning.

Extended Campus Learning

Each operational zone allow some GPS students to take part in virtual learning. Two types of learning will be offered during the 2020-21 school year:

  • TRADITIONAL: Students are on-site with protocols based on the risk dial the district is operating within. If the district moves from yellow to orange or red, students will begin transitioning to Extended Campus Learning.
  • EXTENDED CAMPUS: An experience requested by parents/guardians for students to access school virtually, even when traditional in-person learning is offered. This option, once selected, will be in place for the entire semester.
The Extended Campus Learning enrollment period is now closed. If your student has a significant issue that requires Extended Campus Learning, please contact Byron Olsen, Student Services Director at 308.436.3125.

Updates to Extended Campus Learning

At end of of May 2020, GPS collected feedback from parents and staff about their experience with Extended Campus Learning. We have made many improvements based on that critical feedback and to enhance the learning experience and new content mastery for students. Some improvements include:

  • Simplified classroom management tools and technology
  • Attendance and participation requirements
  • Consistent and accountable grading practices
  • Instructional schedules
  • Teacher office hours for increased access to students and parents

Transportation Requests

GPS will continue to provide transportation in partnership with First Students. Due to enhanced health and safety protocols for bus transportation, parents are expected to register students via the Transportation Request Form by Friday, August 7th

Health and Safety Protocols

The Back-to-School Guide outlines the health and safety protocols GPS is taking in order to reopen schools within each operational zone. Some of the protocol highlights include:

  • Social distancing
  • Redesigned classrooms
  • Enhanced hand-washing expectations
  • Face coverings worn when in buildings when unable to distance
  • Enhanced cleaning
  • Daily symptom monitoring
  • Temperature checks
  • Minimal visitors
  • Water bottle filling stations
