If one were flipping through the Kearney Hub newspaper on September 6, 2008, one may have come across an article with some words that sounded strangely familiar. It seems that Kearney High School in Kearney, Nebraska has had a problem with cell phone usage. At the beginning of the school year, the school banned hooded sweatshirts with pockets, as some students would send text messages on their phones with their hands in the pockets of their sweatshirts. Later, sweatshirts were allowed but cell phones were banned during the school day. The words that may have sounded familiar came from Kearney High School’s assistant principal Trent Steele. “The goal as a school is simple and it’s big. The overall goal is to improve student learning. We want to educate students on what it means to be safe, responsible, and respectful. What we’re trying to do is emphasize accountability and emphasize acknowledging when they do something right.” It seems as if Mr. Steele and Kearney High School have the same philosophy and follow similar rules as we do at Northfield. They too want their students to be safe, responsible, and respectful. Supporting positive behavior is being done at all levels of education across the state.
This month’s PBS poster designer is Leticia Ozuna, a fifth grader in Miss Kniss’ homeroom class. Leticia drew a picture of a bus with the words “BE SAFE!” The students in the bus are facing forward, have their hands inside the bus, and are in their seats. Thanks Leticia for giving us a nice illustration of safe behavior on the bus.
