Elementary After School Program for 2008-2009
May 06, 2008
Our local YMCA operated the elementary after school program for nearly six years by hosting it in three of our four elementary buildings (Northfield, Lincoln and Geil) and in the Scottsbluff elementary schools. The intent was to provide students with a program that focused on organized and supervised activities in the school attended by the students. On days when school was not in session and summer months, the YMCA provided opportunities for students at their facilities.
Funding for the program was provided by the 21st Century grant which expires in August, 2008, however, Gering Public Schools will continue the operation of their after school program. The operation will be similar with a few minor changes during the 2008-2009 school year. The after school program will start immediately following dismissal on the first day of school. A coordinator will be hired for each site. Employees will work closely with parents so they are aware of happenings in the program.
The after school program will operate approximately three hours each day providing physical activity and time for academic study. Time variations may occur due to early dismissal on Wednesdays and staff development days. Students will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Our facilities capacity is approximately 50 students per site; once we reach the limit, children will be placed on a waiting list.
The cost will be $2 per hour for a student to attend. If the student’s family qualifies for a reduced lunch price, it will cost $1 per hour. If the student’s family qualifies for free lunches, participation will be at no cost.
If you have questions regarding the after school program, please contact your building principal. If your child attends Cedar Canyon and wishes to participate, he/she will be transported to one of the other three elementary buildings in the district. Parents will pick up their child at that location. The after school program has been a great addition for our community. With the planned changes for the 2008-2009 school year, the school district will provide a quality after school experience for students, parents, and staff.
