Mission, Philosophy, and Information about me
Dear Parents:
My name is Mrs. Unick and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Because I will be spending time each day with your child, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself, both personally and professionally.
I have taught in the Gering School System for twenty-seven years and at my present school for twenty-six. In the summer, I teach summer school and tutor. Prior to my teaching experience, I attended college at Kearney State College, where I received my BA in Special Education. Later in my teaching career, I received my Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
My favorite color is green, my favorite food is Mexican, my favorite drink is Coke, and my favorite sound is laughter. I also enjoy springtime and autumn and my hobby is scrapbooking.
My husband, Bill, works for Furst McNess Company in Gering. He is an outdoor and sports enthusiast. He is also a huge Nebraska Huskers and Kansas City Chiefs football fan and enjoys raising fish and creating beautiful woodwork as his hobbies.
We have one daughter who graduated with a BS degree in Education and Human Sciences from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in May 2007. She finished her first semester of medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She is pursuing her Masters in Occupational Therapy. As a family, we value our time together.
Teaching and children are my passions. My zeal for teaching is very serious and extends far beyond the regular workday. My goal, my mission, is to establish a learning environment for students that will support their basic human needs for belonging and self-worth. I have a deep belief that all students can learn, succeed, and make a difference in the world given proper time, instruction, and support.
My teaching philosophy is to bring enthusiasm, energy, and a positive attitude to school each day as your child deserves the best. I will recognize your child’s individual potential, and give my support, understanding, and full respect to him or her. In return, I expect cooperation and mutual respect from your child.
I look forward to a fun and successful year. You will be hearing from me on a frequent basis as I value your partnership and support in establishing a climate of respect, caring, and success necessary for life long learning for your child.
Sincerely,
Kathy Unick
