Dear Parents,

A very special thank you to everyone who helped make this school year a success at Northfield Elementary. We do appreciate the support and cooperation that you have given us this year. We want to take this opportunity to especially thank the Northfield Booster Club officers and all the volunteers who helped with the various activities throughout the year. Your extra time helps to make Northfield a great school.

FROM THE GYM
It is difficult to imagine that I am writing the last section of my PE news for this school year. It has been a wonderful year, especially in the PE department. My fourth through sixth graders have all completed the mile run with 83% of them improving their times from the fall. Even more rewarding was the fact that I ended up having to tell some students they could not run it again, because my groups were getting too large with my limited adult supervision. I am very proud of my students and hope I continue to see their motivation to be physically fit.
In the younger grades, the majority of my activities focus on movement. We have also worked on throwing, catching, and striking. With my third graders, I have put them through some of the components of the Presidential Fitness test just to have them get a feel for those upcoming activities when they return as fourth graders.
My Water Fun days will be the afternoons of May 16th and 19th. Fourth through sixth grade will start sometime after lunch on the 16th, and kindergarten through third grade will have their fun day on the 19th. May 20th will serve as a backup day if the weather does not cooperate on either of the scheduled days. I could definitely use some parent volunteers to help manage the 12 stations I have lined up. Please contact the school if you are available to help. I will again ask the classes to wear specific colored T-shirts just to add some team spirit. I will send notes home as the days draw closer.
Over the summer, I would offer a couple of suggestions. Encourage your child to get outside and play. There are so many activities to choose that promote physical fitness. Find that activity that your child thoroughly enjoys and support him/her. Assist your child with skills such as skipping, galloping, hopping and jumping rope. Please work with your child on tying shoes. Constantly tying shoes in the physical education classroom can really become a time issue with only 25 minute class periods. Thank you for all your support! Happy swimming, diving, skateboarding, and skiing!
Mrs. Schwartz

DIRECT INSTRUCTION
Northfield’s Language Arts Direct Instruction program has been very successful this year for K-6 grade students. The students and staff worked very hard to accomplish their goals. There have been many successes celebrated this year. Thanks to all of the parents for supporting the changes made to the reading and language arts program and to the students for accomplishing their goals.

BOOSTER CLUB
The second annual Bingo for Books was another success! Both nights had roughly 100 people in attendance. Every family left with a book, t-shirt, or candle. A special thanks to McDonald’s for donating the cups and to Coca Cola Company for donating the Gatorade. Thank you to our teachers who volunteered their time to make the night go smoothly. We look forward to organizing the event again next year.
We also finalized our chocolate sales with 18 winners earning a ride in the limousine. Chocolate sales brought in over $10,000, which was higher than in years’ past. We appreciate all those who participated and made our fundraiser so successful. We are now discussing plans as to how we want to spend some of those funds.
Upcoming Events for the Club:
• Sixth Grade Graduation-Purchase of DVD’s and a Fiesta Celebration
• Water Fun Day-Purchase of Equipment, Drink and Snack for all participants
• Possible Book Fair-Buy one book, Get the second book free promotion
