Individual Personal Learning Plan

April 10, 2008

Each student’s personal learning plan is tied closely to a student’s career choice.  It is vital that students realize the classes they select can have a major impact on opportunities available throughout high school and their post high school plans.  The personal learning plan must be formulated during the second semester of eighth grade.  This plan charts your child’s high school course selections.

Not every student is able to make a clear career choice by the end of their eighth grade year.  We try to provide information to guide these choices by utilizing the Explore test taken during their eighth grade year.  They should, however, have a good idea of the general direction they want to take.  It is also important to realize, as freshmen, they have limited choices when it comes to electives because of the number of required courses they must take during this year.  Every student should take a rigorous, challenging curriculum.  Our goal for all our elementary students is to equip them with high level reading and math skills allowing them to be successful throughout high school and beyond.  Because of the changing workforce requirements, all students must possess good skills (including, but not limited to, higher levels of math and language art skills, speaking, listening and writing) if they want to pursue a career straight out of high school.

Each eighth grade student, along with their parent, must develop a personal learning plan that matches their career options.  The personal learning plan is reviewed at the completion of each high school semester to make sure our students are on track.  If for some reason they decide to change their career choice, adjustments may be required in the learning plan.  This learning plan will serve as a planning tool for the student and a design tool for the school to be more creative with the courses we offer to meet the needs of our students.

If your eighth grade child has not shared their personal learning plan for high school with you, please ask them to involve you in the process.  If you are not comfortable discussing this with your child, please contact the school for assistance.  The Freshmen Academy principal and counselor in coordination with Junior High counselor are responsible to see that each student leaves their eighth grade year with a complete personal learning plan.  If you have any questions, please make an appointment to finish this plan.

It is important to review the plan prior to the beginning of each semester so you are aware of your child’s progress and any changes made to the plan.
