GPS Joins Coalition Between Education and Agriculture

Gering Public Schools is part of a new coalition that consists of agriculture and educational organizations that was announced on Tuesday.

“Nebraskans United for Property Tax Reform and Education is a coalition that represents 98 percent of the school districts in Nebraska and more than 60,000 landowners. As a member of the Greater Nebraska Schools Association, Gering Public Schools is very proud to be a part of this group,” said Gering Public Schools Superintendent Bob Hastings.

Principles of the group include: adequate and sustainable funding of high quality K-12 education is imperative for the future of Nebraska, and tax reform which reduces the over-reliance on local property taxes is necessary to ensure our tax system is fair to all Nebraska taxpayers.

Founding coalition members include: Nebraska Farm Bureau, Nebraska Fair, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, Nebraska Corn Growers Association, Nebraska State Education Association, Reform for Nebraska's Future, Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association, Nebraska Farmers Union, Women Involved in Farm Economics, Nebraska Soybean Association, Gage County Property Tax Group, Nebraska Pork Producers, Nebraska Wheat Growers, Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska, Schools Taking Action for Nebraska Children's Education, and the Greater Nebraska Schools Association.

“I am very excited to see the ag and educational communities working together on this important issue for Nebraska,” Hastings said. “The economy of Nebraska and our future depend on outstanding public schools and a strong agricultural sector. It is essential that we work together to make sure both remain strong and vibrant by reforming our tax system so that it is fair and equitable for all the people of Nebraska, and, at the same time, provide adequate funding for public schools throughout the state. Gering and Nebraska have high level educational systems and in order to continue at a high level, we must work together to solve this tax and funding issue.”
